The Best Fall Drink Pumpkin Hot Chocolate

Like this post? Share it with others!

It’s fall, y’all — and this is hands-down one of my favorite times of the year. The changing leaves, sweater weather, and, most importantly, pumpkin spice season. When the temperature drops and I want something cozy in my hands, this Pumpkin Hot Chocolate is exactly where I turn. It’s warm, it’s rich, and it tastes like everything I love about this season in a single mug.

This isn’t just a drink — it’s a little celebration of fall. I took the classic hot chocolate I grew up loving and gave it a remix, folding in real pumpkin and warm pumpkin pie spice so it feels grown-up and special without losing any of that nostalgic comfort. It’s the kind of thing that turns an ordinary evening into something that feels intentional, which is really what hosting and home are about for me.

What I love most is how easy and adaptable it is. It comes together in about 15 minutes on the stovetop, works with whole milk or any plant-based milk, and can be served two ways — a family-friendly version everyone can enjoy, or a grown-up version with a splash of your favorite liqueur stirred in. However you make it, it’s sure to be a hit with your guests this season.

When I Love Serving The Best Pumpkin Hot Chocolate

One of the things I love about this recipe is that it works two ways —a grown-up spiked version and a family-friendly one. Here’s when I reach for each:

Spiked — for the grown-ups
When I add a splash of liqueur, this becomes the perfect drink for the occasions below — cozy, a little indulgent, and made for entertaining.

At a tailgate
Warm, spiked, and easy to pour from a thermos, it’s a cozy upgrade to the usual cold tailgate drinks.

At a dinner party
A sophisticated, dessert-like way to end the night that doubles as the after-dinner drink and dessert in one.

For brunch
A festive, grown-up alternative to a mimosa or coffee that feels right at home on a fall brunch table.

Without — a treat the kids can enjoy
The base recipe is completely family-friendly, which makes it perfect for these moments:

A treat after playing outside
A fun little way for the kids to warm up after a cold afternoon in the yard.

A fall birthday party
A festive, seasonal drink that feels special and that little ones can enjoy right alongside the grown-ups.

Packed in a thermos for a pumpkin patch
Packed in a thermos for a pumpkin patch — bring it along on a fall outing so everyone has something warm and cozy to sip.

Ingredients

Milk
The creamy base; whole milk makes it richest, but any plant-based milk works for a lighter cup.

Pumpkin puree
The star; it gives the drink real pumpkin flavor and a velvety body you can’t fake.

Granulated sugar
Sweetens to taste; start light and adjust, since the toppings add sweetness too.

Unsweetened cocoa powder
Brings the “hot chocolate” depth and balances the pumpkin.

Pumpkin pie spice
The warmth; cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves are what make it taste like fall.

Vanilla extract
Rounds everything out and adds a soft, aromatic finish.

Marshmallows & whipped cream
The cozy, indulgent topping that makes each mug feel special.

Cinnamon stick & nutmeg
Garnish for aroma and a beautiful finishing touch.opping that makes each mug feel special.

Optional liqueur
turns the family-friendly base into a sophisticated grown-up nightcap.

Pumpkin Mug Large Ceramic Cup

Perfect for a rich hot chocolate, or a refreshing cold drink. The ceramic material helps maintain your beverage’s ideal temperature.

They’re perfect for topping a steaming mug of hot cocoa. A great addition to trail mix.

Saucepan with Lid

Simmer, stew, boil and more with this essential pan. Clad in mirror-polished stainless steel with an aluminum core, the scratch-resistant saucepan heats quickly and evenly.

How to Make The Best Pumpkin Hot Chocolate

Whisk constantly and keep the heat at medium — the pumpkin and cocoa can scorch on the bottom if the milk gets too hot. If you want it extra silky, give it a quick blitz with an immersion blender before pouring.

Whisk the base
In a medium saucepan, whisk together the milk, pumpkin puree, sugar, cocoa powder, and pumpkin pie spice until smooth.

Warm it gently
Place the saucepan over medium heat, whisking constantly so everything combines and stays smooth.

Heat until hot, not boiling
Continue warming until the mixture is hot and the sugar has fully dissolved — about 5 to 7 minutes. Do not let it boil. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Remove from heat
Once it’s hot and well-mixed, take it off the stove.

Pour and customize
Pour into mugs. For a family-friendly version, serve as is. For a grown-up version, stir a shot of your favorite pumpkin or cream liqueur into each mug.

Top and serve
Finish with a dollop of whipped cream and/or marshmallows, a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg, and a cinnamon stick. Serve immediately.

Step 1.

Mix the Base. Whisk the ingredients together until smooth and fully combined.

Make it vegan/dairy-free
Use oat or almond milk and dairy-free whipped topping.

Make it richer
Swap half the milk for half-and-half, or stir in a little white or dark chocolate as it warms.

Adjust the sweetness
Start with less sugar and add to taste — the toppings bring sweetness too.

Spice it up
Add an extra pinch of cinnamon or a tiny dash of cayenne for a warming kick.

FAQs

Can I make it ahead?
You can make the base ahead and refrigerate it, then reheat gently and add toppings before serving. It’s quick enough that I usually make it fresh, but the base holds up well for a day or two.

Can I make it without alcohol?
Yes — the base recipe is completely family-friendly. The liqueur is entirely optional, just for a grown-up version.

Can I make it dairy-free or vegan?
Absolutely. Use your favorite plant-based milk and a dairy-free whipped topping. Oat milk makes it especially creamy.

Can I use fresh pumpkin instead of canned?
Yes — use plain pumpkin puree, not pie filling. If using fresh, make sure it’s cooked down and smooth so it blends into the milk.

How do I scale it up for a crowd?
The recipe makes 2 servings; multiply as needed and warm it in a larger pot. It’s perfect for a self-serve hot chocolate bar at a party.
