Tips for the Perfect Kentucky Derby Tablescape

I absolutely LOVE the Kentucky Derby. From the fashion, to the cocktails, to the races and the ambiance. This year we are hosting our own Kentucky Derby gathering and I am absolutely LOVING this tablescape. Inspired by the Garland of Roses, I think this is hands down the perfect Kentucky Derby tablescape. But first a few fun facts about the Kentucky Derby!

Fun Facts About The Kentucky Derby

Did you know that the Kentucky Derby is also know as the ” Run for The Roses” which was a phrase coined in 1949 by sports columnist Bill Corum.

Roses are clearly the official flower of the Kentucky Derby after being trademarked in 1883 where all female guests were given roses. Even though it wouldn’t be the official flower until 1904.

The Rose Garland became the centerpiece of the Kentucky Derby, back in 1896 when Ben Brush was given a floral arrangement of white and pink roses for winning. In 1904, the red rose became the official flower of the Kentucky Derby. The current form of the garland was first introduced in 1932 for the 58th running won by Burgoo King.

There are 554 roses on each garland, if anyone is counting. At the end of each Kentucky Derby the winner is given a gorgeous blanket of 564 roses.  Each garland is 2.5 yards long, 14 inches wide and usually weighs about 40 pounds.

The winning jockey is presented with the Jockey’s Bouquet, made of 60 matching long-stem roses wrapped with 10 yards of ribbon.

Now on the good stuff, these year whether you’re hosting a Derby party or simply celebrating with loved ones, here are some tips to design a table setting that’s sure to impress:

// CHOOSE A COLOR PALETTE // For the Kentucky Derby and a homage to the Run for the Roses I think it is best to start with a classic color palette consisting of black, white, and red to capture the Derby’s timeless elegance. You can pay an old homage to the Kentucky Derby and do white and pink like the first garland presented to the winner.

// CENTERPIECE IDEAS // Set the stage with a centerpiece inspired by the Derby’s iconic traditions – consider fresh red roses in a silver trophy vase, adding miniature horse figurines for a whimsical touch. Adding small accents like horseshoes for napkin holders also give you a solid Kentucky Derby vibe. You can even replicate the horse betting tickets to be your menu card for the event as well.

// SETTING THE STAGE AND HOSTESS SEATING // One thing many forget is to show guest where the hostess is seated. Whether you have assigned setting or not a great way to showcase the hostesses seat is to place an item you want. For this party as everyone arrives, I use my Vineyard Vines bandana to show my guests where the hostess is seated.

// FINISHING TOUCHES // Don’t forget the finishing touches! Scatter rose petals or horse-shaped confetti for a dash of charm, and set the mood with candlelight using elegant candlesticks or votive holders.

// THEME PERSONALIZATION // Personalize your tablescape with unique touches that reflect your style and personality – from custom racing form placemats to DIY jockey helmet place cards. Simple little touches make for a huge difference and show off the ambiance of the Derby.
