What to Wear to the Kentucky Derby: Outfit Ideas for the Track or a Party
Whether you are betting on horses at Churchill Downs or heading to a Kentucky Derby party, this is the one day of the year when going over the top is the whole point. I definitely appreciate any excuse to get dressed up, and Derby Day is the best excuse there is. Not only is it a fashion extravaganza, but it is also the afternoon when your Derby hat and dress matter just as much as the classic mint julep in your hand.
These photos come from a Derby party I went to with two of my girlfriends here in Atlanta, and that day taught me you do not need a ticket to the track to dress the part. With this in mind, everything below works whether you are in the grandstand or in a friend’s living room. In essence, Derby style comes down to three pieces of advice: start with the hat, choose a spring dress, and wear heels you can actually stand in. Below, I am sharing each rule, the outfit I wore, ideas for the track and for a party, and what to leave at home.
My Three Rules for a Kentucky Derby Outfit
Start With the Hat
First, your hat is your staple, so choose it before anything else. Select one you are comfortable wearing and have fun with it. This is your opportunity to get creative and step out of your comfort zone. In particular, look for a hat that is bright, unique, and expresses your personal style.
Choose a Spring Dress
Second, Derby Day is the day for spring dresses. If you are thinking about wearing jeans, hold your horses. This is the day to get girly and show off your femininity. Floral prints and peplum dresses are your best friends here, and you truly cannot go wrong with either. To illustrate, these are my favorite florals for brunch, and most of them would be right at home at the track.
On the other hand, if you are not a fan of florals, reach for spring pastels. Some of my favorites are lilac, pink, yellow, lapis blue, and pale dogwood. For a bolder take, this fuchsia dress for spring shows how one saturated color can carry a whole look.
Wear Heels You Can Stand In
Last, but not least, pull out your comfortable high heels. The higher the heel, the closer to God. Equally important, though, is the word comfortable, given that Derby Day is a long one. A block heel or a wedge will hold up on grass far better than a stiletto.
What I Wore: A Black Peplum Dress and a Wide-Brim Hat
I kept it classic with a little black dress. Mine was a pencil peplum dress that was so comfortable and flattering, and I paired it with a wide ruffled hat and strappy heels. As a result, the hat did all the talking. When your dress is a solid color, you can go as big as you like on top.

Kentucky Derby Outfit Ideas From Our Party
My girlfriends each took a different direction, which goes to show there is no single right answer. Here are four ways to do it.
The Floral Sheath and Fascinator
A floral sheath dress with a grey fascinator and a quilted white handbag is the look most people picture when they think of the Derby. The print brings the color, so the headpiece can stay soft and neutral.
The Short Suit and Floral Pumps
You do not have to wear a dress. A tailored grey short suit with floral pumps is every bit as dressed up, and it is a smart choice if you run warm.
The Straw Boater
If a wide brim feels like too much, a straw boater is the easy alternative. It sits flat, stays put, and still reads as a Derby hat.
The Little Black Dress
Black works when the hat is the statement. In my case, a dramatic brim made a simple black dress feel like a Derby outfit instead of a cocktail dress.
What to Wear at Churchill Downs
The Kentucky Derby describes its dress code as one that encourages upscale attire, which often means hats for women and suits or dresses. In other words, think elevated daytime, not evening. Plan for the Weather
The Derby is a rain or shine event, so check the forecast before you commit to an outfit. With this in mind, choose a breathable fabric and bring a light wrap in case the day turns cool.
Plan for a Long Day on Your Feet
You will walk and stand far more than you expect. For that reason, break your shoes in ahead of time, and consider tucking a pair of flats into your bag.
Secure Your Hat
A large hat and an outdoor venue are a risky combination. Make sure yours fits snugly, or pin it in place, so you are not holding it with one hand all afternoon.

Save them for another Saturday. Derby Day is one of the few occasions left where everyone dresses up, and that is the fun of it.
A Hat You Cannot Wear All Day
If it is too heavy, too tight, or blocks your view, you will take it off within the hour. Try it on at home and wear it around the house first.
Brand-New Shoes
Never debut a pair of heels on Derby Day. Without a doubt, sore feet will end your afternoon faster than a losing ticket.
An Evening Gown
The Derby is a daytime event. Sequins and floor-length gowns read as the wrong time of day, so stay with spring dresses and tailored separates.
What Should He Wear?
For men, the idea is the same: light, bright, and tailored. A seersucker or linen suit, or a blazer with pastel trousers, is the classic choice. Add a bow tie or a colorful tie, loafers, and a straw hat if he is up for it.
Where Else to Wear Your Derby Dress
