What You Need For This Delicious Appetizer
- Smoked Salmon: Thinly sliced makes for best in my personal opinion.
- Cream cheese: I highly recommend using full fat cream cheese because it really makes a difference in flavor and texture. You will also want it to be softened for use.
- Fresh dill
- Fresh lemon juice
- Baguette or Crostini bread: You can slice your own baguette or buy pre-sliced crostini. If you’re in a rush most stores now carry pre-toasted crostini as well. But I personally love making my own.
- Olive oil
- Freshly cracked black pepper
- Caviar: Pick on your preference of taste and quality. I personally love Ossetra- as the roe is smaller and really enhances the flavor of the smoked salmon
VARIOUS CROSTINI TOPPING OPTIONS
The best part about this recipe is you can easily mix and match toppings for a variety of crostinis. You can go for sweet and savory to hearty and meaty. Regardless of your favorite flavors or taste buds, here are a few various options that I like!
- Use sour cream, creme fraîche or cream cheese (this recipe we used cream cheese) as the base. For a more intense flavors, you can use blue cheese or ricotta cheese.
- All the meats. You can use cured meats such as prosciutto, salami and pepperoni. Or go traditional and you can use sliced smoked ham or turkey.
- Seafood such as smoked salmon, shrimp, crab, fish roes and caviar are popular toppings.
- Fruits such as sliced pears, figs, apples and peaches.
- Vegetables such as tomatoes (both cherry tomatoes and grape tomatoes), broccoli, mushrooms or celery.
- Walnuts, pine nuts, candied pecans and sliced almonds.
- Dills, basil leaves and sage are popular as the final touch to the toppings.

EASY COOKING TIPS
- Make the bread and toast in the oven ahead of time, I personally would only make it up to a day in advance. Keep them covered or store in a plastic bag.
- For toppings you can assemble the toppings for the crostini appetizers one hour or thirty minutes before serving.
- For the salmon you can used cold or hot- however I personally would use cold smoked salmon as I like to keep everything on the cold side with this crostini.
