My Skin Journey
For the majority of my life I have had flawless skin, and I never really needed to wear makeup. However, I would usually wear a tinted moisturizer and go about my day. I always made sure to get regular facials, drink plenty of water, use sunscreen, et cetera, et cetera.
Let’s fast forward to when I turned 30. My skin basically turned on me. A few months after my 30th birthday, I noticed a few breakouts but nothing too serious, so I thought.
What was alarming was how frequent and aggressive the breakouts were. Over time, the pimples were turning into blackheads and scarring. I was overwhelmed and in complete shock. I was utterly stressed out which, of course, did not help my skin. So I made the decision to get my skin professionally tended to.
Being that my skin type is oily, it was recommended that I try microneedling at a med-spa.
Now, this is a procedure that I swear by. Microneedling is the pricking of the skin with tiny sterilized needles. The small wounds cause your body to make more collagen and elastin, which heal your skin and help you look younger.
Microneedling minimizes scars, dark spots, wrinkles, and large pores. Depending on the desired outcome, needles may be inserted at varying depths.
I will say, though, that this is not a one-and-done procedure. It takes anywhere from three to six sessions for desired results.
When you get your microneedling, you are not going to feel anything because the licensed esthetician is going to use a numbing cream. This is going to allow various depths of the needling.
When I received my microneedling, we used PRP, which is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. This uses injections of a concentration of your own platelets to accelerate the healing.
The downtime is less than 24 hours. But after your procedure, there should be no sweating, which means no gym time or strenuous activities; neither should you have unprotected sun exposure, and you should avoid any skin care product that contains harsh chemicals meant to exfoliate such as retinol and vitamin C serum.
Microneedling and chemical peels got my skin back on track. But I didn’t get those two procedures done on the same day.
The chemical peel was extremely invasive, yet it was effective. If you aren’t familiar with chemical peels, it’s when the use a chemical solution removes layers of skin, revealing the more youthful skin underneath.
I felt that I needed a chemical peel because chemical peels reduce wrinkles, acne, scars, uneven skin coloring, and other skin imperfections.
My chemical peel caused my skin to progressively peel more and more, which is a great thing.
DO NOT PICK IT. Let the skin fall naturally. My skin looked like this for about four days. But between microneedling and chemical peels, my skin is back to where I am in love with it.
Here are some things that help my skin:
* Regular microneedling
* Chemical peels
* Drinking water
* Using sunscreen
* A morning and night skin regimen
* More collagen intake
Take care of your skin. We only have one body, and you want to feel confident in it.
Microneedling can cost $500 to $1500 a session. Chemical peels can cost between $200 to $500. The investment is totally worth it.
