Exploring a new city whether it is your first time or tenth time can be an exhilarating experience, especially during the vibrant summer months. So much seems to be happening when the weather is much warmer, the days are sunnier and semi-longer, and overall people are just out and about. Whether you’re traveling for a vacation or a weekend getaway, immersing yourself in the local culture and discovering hidden gems can make your trip truly unforgettable. On our recent trip to Chicago, that was something that I wanted to really do- immerse myself like a local. So today I am sharing my must-do activities and top tips of what to do when visiting a new city this summer!

EXPLORE LOCAL MARKETS + STREET FOOD AREAS // You guys know me – I am a HUGE foodie! I have found one of the best ways to dive into the local culture is through its food. You truly find some hidden gems, that most locals adore, but tourist don’t know about because we flock to the hotspots by nature. Have you ever wandered into one of the summer street markets? They are amazing as they are truly bustling with fresh produce, handmade crafts, and delicious street food. Spend a morning or afternoon wandering through a local market, sampling the unique flavors of the region. Don’t hesitate to try something new, whether it’s a local delicacy or a refreshing drink. Markets are also a great place to pick up souvenirs from your travel, awesome mementos to remember your trip and of course a great way to support local artisans and small businesses.

TAKE A WALKING TOUR // Walking tours are a fantastic way to get acquainted with a new city. Many cities offer guided tours that cover historical landmarks, architectural marvels, and interesting stories about the city’s past. If guided tours aren’t your style, you can often find self-guided tour maps or apps. Walking through the city allows you to experience its vibe up close and discover charming streets and hidden spots you might otherwise miss. It also helps allow you to explore areas you may have never know where there before you might even find the perfect local coffee shop that will become a new favorite.

VISIT A PARK OR GARDEN // Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors, and most cities have beautiful parks or gardens where you can relax and soak up the sun. Pack a picnic, bring a good book, or simply stroll through the green spaces. Botanical gardens often feature unique plants and flowers that are in full bloom during the summer months. These serene spots provide a peaceful break from the hustle and bustle of city life.

CHECK OUT LOCAL FESTIVALS AND EVENTS // Summer is a prime time for festivals, concerts, and outdoor events. From music festivals, food festivals to cultural celebrations, there’s always something happening in a new city. Before you arrive, look up the local event calendar to see if there are any festivals or special events you can attend. Participating in these activities is a great way to experience the local culture, meet new people, and create lasting memories.

VISIT MUSEUMS AND CULTURAL SITES// While the summer weather might tempt you to stay outdoors, don’t miss out on the city’s museums and cultural sites. Many museums offer special summer exhibitions, and some even have extended hours or outdoor installations. Visiting museums is an excellent way to learn about the city’s history, art, and culture. Additionally, many cities have unique cultural sites, such as historic buildings, monuments, and theaters, which are worth exploring.

GET OFF THE BEATEN PATH // While it’s essential to see the main attractions, some of the best experiences can be found by venturing off the beaten path. Ask locals for recommendations, explore neighborhoods away from the tourist crowds, and be open to spontaneous adventures. Sometimes, the most memorable moments come from unexpected discoveries. Trust me you will be surprised how many hidden gems you will find this way!
