The Pecan on Urbanspoon

After hearing and reading rave reviews about The Pecan, I had to give it a try. On this restaurant field trip, I invited fellow foodie and rap legend, 8ball, for this food experience. 8ball loves the traditional restaurants like Houston’s and Hillstone but is always up for a foodie road trip. I love this about his personality and knew he would be perfect to accompany me. I love when people are willing to try new foods and visits new restaurants. Mix things up a little bit…step out your comfort zone while dining… you may find that you may have a new favorite food or place.

While perusing the menu, I asked 8ball about his favorite restaurants. His favorite restaurant is Memphis’ world renowned Neely’s BBQ, more specifically the interstate location. Hailing from the BBQ capital of the world, succulent smoked meats and flavorful sauces runs through his, like most natives of Memphis, veins. He tells me the BBQ is full of flavor and the sauces are to die for. Memphis is definitely on my food bucket list. 8ball’s second favorite restaurant is Tops BBQ in the Orange Mound neighborhood of Memphis, Tennessee. His favorite item on the menu is the pulled pork sandwich. When asked about his favorite chef, 8ball’s reply was his mom. He says she makes everything to perfection. However, he LOVES his mother’s desserts and pastries, especially her key lime pie. 8ball’s favorite time of the year is the holiday season because this is when she prepares a variety of desserts and pastries. The way he described these pastries, I will DEFINITELY be visiting for a taste.

The Pecan is an upscale southern restaurant with a lot a pizzazz. From the outside, the restaurant is very non-assuming and does not appear to be very large. But when one walks in you are completely taken off guard because the décor is beautiful and stylish. We were seated and I was instantly impressed with the menu. There were so many options for us to choose from and from the beginning of meal our server, Clarence, was incredible. We loved his phrase, “I’ll make it so”. Clarence was extremely accommodating and went above and beyond with his service. I will make sure to request him every time I visit. His aura and personality were a great start to our dining experience. I started with a cocktail called Tony Marrow. A Tony Morrow is Absolut Citron, splash of peach tea, fresh squeezed lemonade and apple pucker.  It was a beautiful cocktail that was not only pleasing to the eyesight but with the palate as well.

Clarence brought pecan rolls to our table for us to start with. The pecan rolls served with homemade pecan butter was the perfect blend of sticky sweetness. We decided to have soup as our first course. I opted for curry carrot ginger soup garnished with lump crab meat. The soup blend was an incredibly perfect blend of carrot and curry. Neither ingredient was overbearing. However, when I read the menu I expected actual crab meat to be in the soup but it was added as a nice garnish. 8ball started with leek and asparagus soup garnished with chive Chantilly crème. He loved the flavor and seasoning but thought it would have been better if there were actual pieces of asparagus in the soup. Soup Rating: Erica 9/10 8ball 9/10 The presentation as you can see was magnificent. We both thoroughly enjoyed the soup.

For our entrees, I ordered Tybee Island Crab Cakes – two sautéed lump crab cakes served with spicy creole aioli served with garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed haricot verts and decided to order a glass of St. Michelle Riesling; one of my favorite wines to accompany the entree. The crab cakes were lightly pan fried large lumps of crab. I am very picky about crab cakes and I was very delighted with the portions and the amount of crab each cake had. The spicy creole aioli was the perfect touch. The crab cakes portion was so large that I couldn’t eat both. I was beyond satisfied with my decision to try the crab cakes. 8ball ordered the Pepper Crusted New Zealand Lamb Chops. The lamb chops were lightly dusted, seared, broiled and finished with a balsamic reduction, served with garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed haricot verts. The portion was smaller than he expected but what was lacking in portion size was more than meliorated with taste. The lamb was extremely tender, juicy and favorable with every bite. Visiting The Pecan will not leave one disappointed. Overall, we enjoyed our dining experience. From start to finish, the hostess was friendly, the server was attentive and overall vibe of the restaurant is professionally and delightful. The Pecan is definitely on my list of restaurants to return and give it a very high recommendation to friends and family.
