A fellow foodie told me about Poor Calvin’s and since there are very few restaurants in metro Atlanta that I have not dined; it became a priority to visit. After looking at the website, I discovered that Poor Calvin’s serves a blend of classic dishes with an eclectic flair of American and Asian fusion. So after MUCH anticipation, I was finally able to visit for lunch. Reservations are not required though highly recommended. Once you open the doors, the ambience and décor make you feel as if you have been swept away to a secret Zen oasis. I watched in awe as platters filled with colorful and uniquely plated entrées were delivered to eagerly awaiting patrons. To say the least, the food presentation was enough to equally tantalize and tickle senses; leaving me anxiously waiting for my entrée to make it to the table. After a very short wait, the lobster mac and cheese and North Meets South fried chicken was delivered. Chef Calvin is extremely talented with his ability to achieve meals that are generous in portion size and equally aesthetic and palette pleasing. The lobster mac and cheese was a perfect, creamy blend of lobster, cheese and spices that left just the right amount of kick at the end of every bite. The North Meets South fried chicken was pure perfection. The chicken breast was the right balance of crispiness and juicy tenderness. Poor Calvin’s offers an amazing brunch on Saturday and Sunday. With drink specials that include mimosas and sangrias coupled with amazing food, making this a weekend spot for brunch will not be a regret. For a dining experience that is far from the norm, Poor Calvin’s is a MUST.
